Today, True Leaf Medicine International Ltd. announced in a press release to expand to Europe earlier than expected, where its new hemp-based product line will be produced, marketed and sold in 2016.
The company has found a European co-packer manufacturer of pet products, who will produce the same products which are on sale in Canada since October. The hemp and other plant-based ingredients will be sourced from Europe. True Leaf has engaged Mr. Narcisse Kayser as European Sales Director to assist in the European market launch as he was the former International Sales Manager for ANF Pet Foods, knowing by heart the European pet foods markets. True Leaf’s CEO, Darcy Bomford, successfully worked with Mr. Kayser in the past:
“I’ve worked with Narcisse to develop the European market before and I’m extremely pleased with our progress. With his help we’ve been able to source high-grade Eastern European hemp cultivars and initiate manufacturing and marketing initiatives to service Western and Eastern Europe. We expect to have products to market and generating revenue by mid-2016, which is ahead of schedule “
Furthermore, True Leaf is already in negotiations with a pet industry consulting firm with deep roots in European markets to spearhead sales in the region. At the moment, True Leaf is also reviewing prospective firms to represent the company in Europe. As part of the initiative, Darcy Bomford and Kevin Bottomley from True Leaf will be in Europe this and next week. The company is planning to exhibit and officially launch the European product line at Interzoo 2016, the world’s largest pet industry exhibition, held every 2 years at the Messe in Nürnberg, Germany.
True Leaf‘s products can already be ordered on its new website: www.trueleaf.com
Today‘s press release reaffirms True Leaf‘s commitment to its European shareholders as well as valuing the European market as a high-volume sales opportunity. According to the company, the European pet foods market is worth $26 billion, thus about half the size of the $60 billion market in North America.
Hence, the 2016 sales numbers may turn out significantly higher than originally expected as the company planned to enter Europe at a much later stage. Rockstone welcomes the immediate market penetration approach for Europe as a similar strong demand as in North America is anticipated. The hemp-based chews for dogs, which True Leaf developed over the last months, will an innovative novelty in Europe as well.
One year ago, True Leaf came to Europe to present in Munich, Frankfurt, Geneva and Zurich. A few months later, in February 2015, True Leaf went public in Canada and Germany. Since then, the company raised capital and launched its new department, True Leaf Pet. In September, True Leaf unveiled its innovative dog chews, which contain hemp and other plant-based ingredients. The 3 products are branded as “True Love”, “True Spirit” and “True Calm”, and are available for sale since a few weeks, each at a retail price of $14.99 CAD or $0.39 CAD per chew (40 chews or 200g per bag).

True Leaf is entering the $60 billion pet industry in North America, as well as the $26 billion pet foods market in Europe, with a line of hemp-focused pet chews and supplements. The company has also filed an application under Health Canada’s Marihuana for Medicinal Purposes Regulations (MMPR) to become a Canadian licensed producer. It has passed through the preliminary and enhanced screening process of Health Canada’s review and is currently awaiting security clearance. The recent change of the Canadian government has revived many marijuana stocks in Canada.
Government Change in Canada
Last month, the Conservative Party has been replaced by the Liberal Party. Based on the Liberal win, Canadian based marijuana stocks started to appreciate; also because the new government indicated its plans to legalize marijuana for recreational use similar to some US states. Less than 40,000 patients in Canada are allowed to use marijuana for medical purposes. According to the University of Ottawa, an estimated 2.3 million people in Canada consume marijuana already for recreational use. Certainly, it could take 1-2 years until marijuana is fully legalized for recreational use in Canada as the government must organize and execute regulations, taxation, dispensaries and other aspects. However in the meantime, Health Canada may issue more production licences in the not too distant future in order satisfy the exptected demand in the years to come.
Rockstone will follow the Canadian market developments closely besides True Leaf‘s corporate developments. Rockstone is looking forward to present with True Leaf in Munich, Geneva, Zurich and Frankfurt this and next week.
